About

We're trying to make apartment buildings feel like neighbourhoods again.

Apartment living, by default, is structurally isolated. You share walls with twenty, fifty, two hundred people you mostly nod to in the lift. Most of those people would happily lend you a drill, walk your dog, or recommend a plumber — they just have no easy way to know you're asking, and you have no easy way to ask.

The why

The friendliest buildings in the world aren't friendly because of architecture. They're friendly because someone — a long-time resident, a building manager, a noticeboard near the lift — quietly maintains the social plumbing. They know who's new, who's moved out, who lost the umbrella, who's looking for a babysitter. Most buildings don't have that person. The ones that do, lose them eventually.

Humbird is that plumbing, in app form. Not a social network — there's no follower count, no public profile, no algorithmic feed. Just the layer that lets neighbours act like neighbours.

The product

One app, three sides, one building. Items: borrow what you need from upstairs, sell what you've outgrown, donate what'd otherwise go to the charity bin. Services: dog walks, plant watering, the occasional grocery run — small jobs between people who live two floors apart. Noticeboard: lost things, requests, recommendations, general chat. All of it kept inside your building.

Managers and strata committees get a dashboard for facility bookings, maintenance triage, and building-wide broadcasts. Residents get an app. Both stay out of each other's way.

The founder

Charlie Watson

Founded by Charlie Watson in Brisbane, Australia in 2026. Charlie's been thinking about how apartment buildings could feel less anonymous for years; Humbird is the version of that idea that turned out to be small enough to actually build, and useful enough to actually want.

Principles

What we won't compromise on.

Building-only by design

Other buildings never see your listings, your messages, or your name. Tenant isolation is a foundation, not a feature.

Residents own their data

You control what we aggregate. Opt out of aggregate insights anytime in Profile → Privacy. We never sell personally identifiable data, ever.

Humbird never touches money

When you sell, hire, or pay a neighbour, it stays between you and them. We are the discovery layer, not the payment processor — deliberately.

Quietly powering community

We're not trying to make the app sticky. We're trying to make the lift feel less awkward. Success is your building feeling more like a neighbourhood.

Where we are now

Piloting at The Shire, in Brisbane.

Humbird is in its first building — The Shire, an apartment complex in Brisbane. We're expanding cautiously, building by building, learning what makes the difference between a building that adopts Humbird and one where it sits unused. We'd rather grow slow and right than fast and forgettable.

If you manage or live in an apartment building anywhere in Australia and you think Humbird belongs there, we'd love to hear from you.
